In relation to population, Denmark is at the top with Sweden and Norway, when it comes to traveling to Thailand. This result comes from the latest statistics from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism. About 152 000 Danes traveled to Thailand in 2010.
Thousands of people from Scandinavia are drawn to Thailand’s culture and warm climate. In relation to population size, Denmark is among the top with the neighboring countries, Sweden and Norway, when traveling to this beautiful country.
This is according to the most recent published statistics from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
In 2010, 152 398 Danes traveled to Thailand. An increase of about 5% compared to the previous year. The figure means that 2.75% of the total Danish population last year traveled to Thailand to get a taste of the Eastern culture.
Sweden is at the top with 3.80% of the population last year traveling to Thailand, while Norway is side by side with Denmark.
Taking a closer look at the figures for the travel pattern of European countries in relation to the population, the Nordic countries are clearly over-represented in this case.
For big countries like France and Germany the interest of traveling to Thailand is significantly less than the interest of the Danes. In 2010, about 461 000 French nationals traveled to Thailand, only equivalent to 0.71% of the population or just ¼ of the Danish urge to travel per capita.
Country | Number of travelers | Share of total population |
Sweden | 355 214 | 3,80% |
Denmark | 152 398 | 2,75% |
Finland | 146 946 | 2,75% |
Norway | 132 108 | 2,72% |
Great Britain | 810 727 | 1,31% |
Holland | 196 994 | 1,91% |
Germany | 606 874 | 0,74% |
France | 461 670 | 0,71% |
Italy | 168 203 | 0,28% |
Spain | 67 242 | 0,15% |
Source: Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Spain is placed at the bottom with only 67 242 visiting Thailand in 2010 or the equivalent to 0.15% of the population. The statistic shows, that the Scandinavian countries on the other hand are at the top with very frequent visits to Thailand. Quite the contrary, residents from especially France, Italy and Spain rarely travel from Europe to Thailand. Part of the explanation is possibly the climate with the Frenchmen, Italians and Spanish people being used to warmer climate than the Northerners of Europe.
