Many people in the travel industry believe Burma has great potential as a destination for tourists. If the political situation in Burma changes, the country will be high on the list of favorite destinations. The country has rich culture, magnificent scenery, a hospitable population, superb beaches and is the immediate neighbor to Thailand.
It is mainly the smaller travel companies eager to offer trips to Burma. One of them is Nyhavn Tours where CEO, Lars Mathiasen, keeps a close eye on the situation in the country these days.
“We have provided contacts and subcontractors in Burma. In principle, I can press the button, the day after the military dictatorship falls. Those, not having considered Burma, if the military dictatorship falls, do not know the area well enough. The potential is enormous,” he says. Big players such as Star Tour and MyTravels agree that the potential is big, but they are more hesitant and focus on security in the country. “It will be a good country to start up and we lack destinations in the area, as Thailand by now is well booked.”
“If it calms down and the Foreign Ministry no longer advises against traveling there, we will obviously consider it. But it requires the Foreign Ministry’s travel advice turning from red, and not just to yellow, but green, meaning no danger is at stake for tourists in the country,” Stig Elling from Star Tour says. He stresses that the low price range makes it possible offering trips at a reasonable price, where most Danes will be able to participate.
