Introduction: On this private two-day River Kwai trip you will get many of the great experiences that a stay in Thailand should include. You will be picked up at your hotel at 7 am. After a good drive we are outside of Bangkok and the beautiful and lush landscape begins to show. We are close to Damnerm Saduak, where the Floating Market is located.
After a good drive we are outside of Bangkok and the lush landscape shows that we are getting closer to one of the highlights – The Floating Market. To reach the market, we sail with a long-tailed boat through the canals. We float on the narrow canals between the small Thai houses. When we get there, it is swarmed with small boats filled with coconut pancakes, palm sugar, sun hats, souvenirs and much more. Buy exotic fruits that you never knew existed, like pomelo, rambutan and durian. After the visit we continue to the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi. We start off visiting to the Allied War Cemetery from World War II. 6900 Allied prisoners are buried here. We also stop at the Thailand-Burma Museum, which gives a good historic insight. We continue to the world famous “Bridge over the River Kwai”, where we will cross and just enjoy the ambiance of the area. Next we get onboard the train running on the “Death Railway”. The railway was built under terrible conditions by the Allied Prisoners of War under Japanese captivity during World War II. The one-hour long train ride runs along the river on tracks that sometimes seem glued to the steep cliffs. This is truly a great experience with a beautiful scenic landscape.
Late in the afternoon we head back to the hotel, where dinner is served. The rest of the evening is at your disposal. Dinner and overnight will be at a cozy jungle hotel.
The second day starts with a hearty breakfast before continuing to Hellfire Pass – a place on the railway which caused the most casualties. We will visit an impressive museum before we move to the Pass.
The workers here had to chop two ravines through a huge mountain to provide access for the tracks, and they worked 24 hours a day.
At night, when the place was artificially lit, it looked like “The entrance to Hell” and the workers were quick to refer to the place as “Hellfire Pass”, a name that has been kept.
After Hellfire Pass we continue to the beautiful Erawan Waterfall. The Erawan Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall in seven levels. It requires a bit of legwork to reach all seven levels, but bring your bathing suit as it is possible to take a dip several places along the way.
After a late but good lunch we head back in the afternoon to either Hua Hin or Bangkok.
Depending on traffic, expect to be back in Bangkok/Hua Hin between 7 and 8 pm.
